Collecta Achelousaurus Reviewed
Collecta, the toy and replica company are earning a well-deserved reputation for their excellent models of horned dinosaurs. Over the past couple of years, this company has introduced a number of horned dinosaurs into their dinosaur model range, there is of course a Triceratops (several in fact); but in addition Styracosaurus, Torosaurus, Koreaceratops, Utahceratops and Chasmosaurus have been included.
All these models are very well designed and accurately depict the prehistoric animals they represent, this review concerns one horned dinosaur (Ceratopsian) - Achelousaurus and what a very good model it is too.
In 1:40 Scale
The Achelousaurus model measures fifteen centimetres in length, although this is not supposed to be a scale model, as palaeontologists estimate Achelousaurus to have grown to about six metres, this makes the model approximately 1:40 scale. This Cretaceous herbivore was named Achelous's Lizard after the Greek horned river God Achelous. The name is pronounced Ak-ee-low-saw-us.
Fossil Finds Help Model Makers
Achelousaurus is known from several partial skulls and a single fragmentary skeleton discovered in the upper layers of the famous Two Medicine Formation of Montana (United States). Achelousaurus is a medium-sized horned dinosaur related to Pachyrhinosaurus and Centrosaurus. Named by the Canadian palaeontologist Scott Sampson in the mid 1990s, the species name "horneri
" honours the American palaeontologist John "Jack" Horner who was born in Montana and has worked extensively on dinosaur fossils found in that American State. As several fossil elements from the type species (Achelousaurus horneri) and other individuals were found in close proximity, palaeontologists believe that this plant-eating dinosaur lived in herds.
A Sturdy Replica
The model is very well made and depicts a sturdy, Late Cretaceous Ceratopsian, a member of the Centrosaurine group of horned dinosaurs, known for their relatively short neck frills and the presence of a horn or large bump on top of the naris bone. The model is painted a sandy, brown colour with subtle bands of black colouration running from the back of the neck along the body and down to the stumpy tail. The substantial and prominent bump on the nose is painted a vivid red. There are also red paint markings on the front of the neck crest. Scientists believe that visual communication was very important to dinosaurs, a brightly coloured frill with a distinctive nose horn may have acted as a signalling device between herd members or perhaps for visual display to permit disputes to be settled. The eyes are particularly well painted as are the large nostrils of this heavy-set dinosaur.
This replica of one of the more unusual of the horned dinosaurs will make an excellent addition to a dinosaur model collector's collection, it is also likely to prove to be a firm favourite amongst dinosaur fans.

A Game For Every Occasion
If you have children or are just a big child at heart then you may well love table games just as much as we do, however unless you are lucky enough to have a big house with enough space for a separate games room then like most of us you may just have space for a small pool table, or a table football machine but not both.
Indeed your kid's tastes may have changed and whilst they once used the pool table a lot they may now want a table tennis table, but you do not want to get rid of the pool table, as you like to play on it when your friends come around at the weekend. Now this is a common problem, but unless you win the lottery or want to move house then gaining extra space may well prove to be a big issue, so what is the answer?
Well have you considered purchasing a multi-functional gaming table? These tables start at prices from under £130 and as their name suggests offer you more than one game from the same table.
Indeed some multi-functional gaming tables can offer up to twenty different games, other tables offer ten or half a dozen games to played on them. Typical games will include pool, table tennis, table football, push hockey, bowling, chess, backgammon, shuffleboard, cards and draughts. A basic games table at this price point will be around 4ft long and thus able to be fitted in to nearly any household (Even if you do have to squeeze it in one corner of the garage and pull it out to use it). These tables have interchangeable tops that can be switched over to play different games very quickly and easily and they save on two fronts, space and cost.
Clearly the space saving they offer is great as if you can combine a table tennis table, pool table as well as table football all in to one unit then you are going to save a lot of space! There is also the big added bonus that you are only buying one unit and not three different games tables.
Whilst there maybe a slight compromise on size, the price of these gaming tables means that they offer you and your kids a wide variety of games at a bargain of a price compared to buying each one separately, which is a good compromise that most of us can live with.

5 Things to Consider When Buying a Large RC Helicopter
A great variety of RC helicopters are available these days. This variety includes those with different designs, made of different materials, with different power sources, in different price ranges and sizes. Before they select one, all these factors should be considered by new buyers. In the market, you will easily find a variety of small, medium and large-sized ones. As far as looks and flying are concerned, large RC helicopters are more realistic and stable.
So, if you are thinking of buying an RC helicopter that is larger than the usual, and you want to select the best one for you, then you should consider the following things:
1. Size Does Matter: There are numerous sizes in which RC helicopters are available, and the size of large ones is obviously large. In comparison to a smaller model, a larger one certainly looks better, but certainly this also depends on the materials used and how the model was constructed. At times, price is also dictated by price, but apart from that, a difference is also made by appearance and performance.
2. Energy Source: Many energy sources power large Remote Controlled helicopters. For instance, they can be electricity, gas or nitro powered. Popular options are gas and nitro, since a lot of power is provided by them. However, large-sized RC helicopters are quite noisy when they are powered by gas or nitro, which is the only drawback. On the other hand, regular charging is required by electric models, but they are not disruptive and operate silently.
3. Quality of the Blade: Of any large Remote Controlled helicopter, the most important features include the tail rotor and main blade. These two blades greatly determine the flight performance and quality of the helicopter. This means that in comparison to an RC helicopter with shoddy blades, a model that has better bladder will be easier to control and will certainly fly better.
4. Material: Helicopters can be made from a number of choices, including fiber glass, polycarbonate, carbon fiber and polystyrene. The weight of a large model depends on the durability and heaviness of the material the helicopter is made of. The price of a particular model also depends on the material. For instance, the most affordable and light materials are plastics like polystyrene and polycarbonate. However, fiberglass is a heavier material and is more durable than plastics. Another light option that is also considerably durable and strong is carbon fiber. Carbon fiber RC helicopters are also very costly.
5. Price: The above four factors greatly determine the price of large Remote Controlled helicopters. The price of a large Remote Controlled helicopter can be anywhere from $100 to $1000, depending on the combination of blade quality, material, size and source of energy. Of course, your budget will also determine the type of large RC helicopter you will be able to purchase.
Thus, now that you know the five important considerations, you can now start looking at various large RC helicopter options that are available today and select the best one.

Best 2012 Halloween Costumes for Boys
If you are looking for the best 2012 Halloween costumes for boys, we have some ideas for you to get started. Depending on the age of the child, you are going to most likely want to get some input from them on what they want to be - unless they're a baby, of course. In all seriousness, involving the child in the process of picking a suitable Halloween costume can go a long way in making sure they have a lot of fun on the big night, which is what it's all about - not to mention the candy.
Spiderman Costumes - The Amazing Spiderman was big this year, and as in years past, you can expect many boys to want to become the wisecracking Spidey. The good news is that there are quite a few great - and relatively cheap - Spiderman costumes available.
Batman Costumes - Another Superhero that's huge again this year is Batman. As with Spiderman, the popularity of this costume means there are going to be a lot of different options for you as a parent. From simple plastic outfits to complex costumes with a separate Batman mask and accessories, there's something for every budget.
Historical Costumes - Not every boy is going to want to use a historical figure for a Halloween costume, but this can be great in many different ways. For one, not a lot of other kids are going to have the same costume most likely if you go with a George Washington, Ben Franklin or some other historic figure - Caesar anyone?
Homemade Costumes - If you are on a budget or just like to be creative and spend quality creative time with your children, homemade costumes for Halloween can be a great idea. You just want to make sure you involve the boy in every step of the process so he is happy with the outcome and will want to wear it on Halloween night!
Soldier Costumes - This is one that is relatively easy to put together cheaply. A little camo and some other accessories - no guns! - and you can have a great looking solider whether it's a sailor or someone in the airforce or marines. Camo face paint really puts the final touches on this great costume idea.
Fireman Costume - Being a civil servant or first responder like a fireman on Halloween is a lot of fun and may be an indication of a future career path for your little one. There are a lot of great accessories you can get to make your costume really stand out from all the others. Don't forget the cute fireman's hat and boots!
After you choose which costume you want, it's all about saving money. Next, we have some tips to make sure you get the most for your money when buying a boy's Halloween costume this year.
Shop Early - One of the best things you can do is shop early. If you were thinking smart last year, you bought your costumes a day after Halloween when they went on sale. Even if you didn't do this, the earlier you start shopping - even during the final summer months - the more you are going to be able to look around and find the absolute best price.
Shop Online - Speaking of finding the best price, another great idea is to make sure you do most of your shopping online. While there's nothing more fun than taking a kid (or five) to a Halloween costume shop (sarcasm!), there's something to be said about shopping for a costume online. It's easy, safe and convenient - and you can save money too.
Read Reviews - Finally, you are going to want to make sure you read reviews of the various costumes before you get out your credit card and make any purchases. There are quite a few places you can read reviews these days, but you should find a website you trust and stick with them and their recommendations for the best Halloween costumes for boys in 2012.
Halloween is all about having fun and being able to dress up and score a lot of candy. Picking out the costume should not be stressful or a headache! The sooner you start shopping for a Halloween costume, the sooner you're going to be able to relax and just enjoy the holidays.

Carnegie Collectibles Diplodocus Dinosaur Model Reviewed
Huge Model of Diplodocus from Safari Ltd
In 1898 Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish born businessman reputed to have amassed one of the largest personal fortunes of all time, read an article about the amazing dinosaur finds being unearthed in the western USA. He decided to financially support the efforts of these scientists and funded an expedition to Wyoming to find a dinosaur for the city of Pittsburgh. This enthusiasm from one of the world's most successful tycoons helped build up the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, permitting it to have one of the largest collections of natural wonders and rare fossil exhibits. The palaeontologists at the Museum approve the prehistoric animal models that are made by Safari Ltd and carry the "Carnegie Collectibles" brand.
Funding for a Museum
Carnegie funded the building of the dinosaur hall at the museum, it needed to be a substantial project as it was soon to house an almost complete fossil skeleton of a Diplodocus. This dinosaur was named and described in honour of Carnegie's philanthropy, this species full name is D. carnegii.
This magnificent 87 foot long specimen is affectionately known as "Dippy". Copies have been cast and presented to a number of other Natural History museums around the world, including the Natural History museum, London where the cast of "Dippy" graces the main entrance hall.
Super-Sized Model
Now the Carnegie Dinosaur Collection has been updated with a new model version of Diplodocus. The new model of this late Jurassic herbivore is a fraction short of 60 cms long, depicting this huge animal in superb detail. The controversial spines running down the back of the animal, seen in other model replicas are gone, this contrasts this new model with the Natural History museum collection which depicts Diplodocus in battleship grey with a line of spines running from the hips down over the tail.
New, Modern Interpretation Based on Fossil Material
This new interpretation of this famous Sauropod shows Diplodocus with contrasting colouration around the head, perhaps an indicator of social rank within the herd or male dominance. Facial colouration such as this may well have helped maintain a hierarchy within a group of these animals. The skin is dotted with scutes small dermal armour but the spines have not been shown in contrast to the Natural History museum collection's model. It is one of the largest model dinosaurs made by a mainstream manufacturer and with its fine details it is going to be very popular.

Create Fun Theme Parties With Kids' Art Kits
If you are looking for something different for your child's next birthday party, why not create a fun theme party centered around kids' art kits? Crafts are fun activities for kids, and they love to get right into their work and make a mess. You can set up an area for them that is just for crafting, and they will have fun and be quiet while you and the grown-ups sit and chat in a different area of the house.
You can have various crafting themes. For instance, if you are having a party for little boys, you may want to get them to make things such as wooden racing cars, bird houses, etc. Girls can make jewelry, paper dolls and other projects. You will also find many projects that both boys and girls love to work on, which is great if there are going to be boys and girls at the same party.
Here are some of the craft projects you can incorporate into the theme for your child's next party:
• Friendship Bracelets - These bracelets are really popular, and fast and easy to make. You can get all of the supplies you need at a very low cost, and it is a really inexpensive way to provide a fun activity for a little girl's birthday. Even older kids love these bracelets, and teenagers may even want to have bracelet kits to work on at slumber parties.
• Sun Catchers - These are easy craft projects that kids of all ages can have fun with. You get a clear plastic ornament (there are many different designs to choose from), and special paints. All the kids have to do is paint-by-numbers, let the paint dry, and they have their own sun catchers to hang in their bedroom windows.
• Wood Crafts - You can find all kinds of kits that have wood crafts. Little boys and girls alike will love putting together and painting a birdhouse. This type of project will take up quite a bit of time, so you won't be worrying about finding ways to entertain kids at a party.
• Jewelry - What little girl doesn't love to wear jewelry? Kids love crafts, and little girls love jewelry, so a jewelry-making party would be an ideal choice. You can get kits so they can make bracelets, rings, necklaces and more. They can keep the things they make, or trade with each other. If it is a birthday party, the kids can make jewelry to give as presents, which will save their parents a lot of money on gifts. In fact, you can specify on the invitations that you will be supplying the kits, and the kids will be making presents so there is no need for them to buy anything.
The next time you are at a department or craft store, take a look at the various kids' art kits that are available. You can use them to plan your next theme party for your kids or even stock up so you have plenty of activities for your kids to do on rainy days.

Dream Lites Pillow Pets Review: A Night Light Show for Bedtime
There are monsters in the closet, ghosts in the vents and a vast darkness as far as the eye can see. The imaginations of our little ones run wild with dark thoughts when it's time for bedtime don't they? And there's nothing like a bad dream or nightmare to interrupt mommy & daddy's personal time. Being scared of the dark is natural - even for adults. And there's no worse feeling as a child.
Now, the creators of the Pillow Pets from a few years back have taken this huge As Seen on TV hit one step further to create the Dream Lite (Light) Pillow Pet. In case you don't you remember, Pillow Pets hit the infomercial market a few years back and almost every kid on the planet was asking Santa to drop one off on Christmas Eve. If you're a new parent, I'll bring you up to speed - these numerous animal characters unfolded into a comfy pillow or folded up to make a terrific stuffed playmate.
Dream Lites has taken the cuddly Pillow Pet creatures and used them as a platform to create the new Dream Lites Pillow Pets - a pet that creates a magical light show that supposedly soothes & entertains your little one until they peacefully fall asleep. These built-in night lights display a peaceful, star-filled light show onto the ceiling (or any other surface in the bedroom). And at the center of the show is a projection of whichever Pillow Pet character you choose.
The Dream Lites Pillow Pets changes colors from green to blue to amber every four seconds - or you can set it to stay on one color. One great feature that we liked is the built-in timer that shuts it off after 20 minutes. This timer-mode saves the life of the batteries. And of course, just like the original Pillow Pets, the Dream Lites can be laid out flat or folded up as a pet.
Currently, there are four styles to choose from, with more being released closer to Christmas this year - the Rainbow Unicorn, Playful Penguin, Snuggly Puppy & the Fluttery Butterfly.
If your kids have been watching television at all the past few months, there's no way that they have missed the As Seen on TV Infomercial for the Dream Lites Pillow Pets. And if your kids are anything like mine, they beg for one every time they see the commercial. So we decided to let our 6 & 8 year olds take them for a test spin & so far, the Dream Lites are a huge hit in our house.
Personally, I think they're slightly overpriced @ $39.95/each - but I suppose that's just the budget-conscious Dad in me, since that price is pretty much in line with similar products on the market.
Dream Lites is going to be one of the hottest items of the Christmas 2012 season - so get one early!

Creating, Making, And Dressing Accessories For Dolls
How to Accessorize and Embellish Doll Clothing
Once you have finished a dazzling little doll outfit from your doll clothes sewing patterns, one is now set for the finishing touches to accessorize and embellish your creation to the point where it is fully unique and amazing. Regardless of the purpose for your doll clothes creation, the originality is really in the details! Planning the accessories for dolls will make sewing doll clothes a favorite pastime also!
What creative details can one add that shows this is an original creation? Should you add miniature appliqués? fancy buttons? colorful trim or intricate lace? rhinestones? sequins? clip-on earrings? What'll make the doll clothes extraordinary? Or a small bit of hand embroidery could give just the right finishing touch to make the doll clothing look imcomparable and add your original mark to it.
Take a peek at young girls around and notice what the current trends are. What styles of jewelry do you see? What's the "in" styles of apparel that would be of interest to the owner of the dolly?
Since jewelry designing has become a craft favorite among young girls, perhaps you could create a matching necklace for the little girl and her doll. Headbands are also a constantly revolving trend, but normally the material is what is changing. T-shirt fabric or sequins sewn into ribbon make a cute headband and a casual, cute look.
Perhaps one could consider the personality of the one who will have the doll. Should your doll be prissy or a tomboy? Fun or serious? A fake strand of pearly beads might be just the appearance one would like. Purses, shoes, and jewelry are necessary accessories for making your dolly one-of-a-kind. Maybe the doll needs a cute swimsuit, umbrella, Frisbee, and beach towel. Or maybe she could use a recyclable grocery bag created from canvas with clay veggies and fruits in it! Or is your doll hoeing in the garden and can use some a straw hat, garden tools, and chore boots or sloggers? Does dolly need fuzzy slippers and a bathrobe? Or would she want a ball gown and a tiara? Or perhaps she could use a pet made from flannel or that scrap of fuzzy, furry fabric? Or a sleeping bag and a tent? Accessories are where the fun is!
Choosing if your dolly will be a modern day fashion child or an antique style from time past will also help embellish and accessorize as you sew the dolly's clothing.
If you are sewing for a home business, think of the possible idea of whether or not this is something that one could replicate or if it is just a one-time enjoyable project. Which ever, have a good time adding accessories for dolls with a touch of glamour!

What to Get an 11 Year Old Boy This Christmas
If you are wondering what to get an 11 year old boy this Christmas, we have a list of ideas that should give you some assistance. Buying for a boy this age can be tricky - especially if you're not around them all the time. As their tastes can change quickly from week to week at this age, you really need to put some thought into any gift you want to get them.
Here are some general ideas on great Christmas gift ideas for 11 year old boys. Although it is not an extensive list, it should give you some good ideas on what to get for a boy this age.
Video Games - If you know the boy is into video games, try to find out what game system or console they have so that you can get a game that will work. Also make sure it is age appropriate and something they do not have already. Sometimes, a membership to something like GameFly where you rent games like movies is a better idea.
Sports - From basketballs to footballs to blankets or other memorabilia, there are quite a few cool gifts you can get a boy who is into sports. Again, though, you are going to have to do a little homework in order to get something they are going to like. The best way to do this is to know what sport they are into the most and also find out what they are wanting or needing.
Books - This is not going to be a good gift for all boys, but for those who are not so much into sports, it can be the best gift ever. Whether it is the Choose Your Own Adventure books or something like the Percy series, there is something for everyone out there. You may have trouble finding an actual bookstore these days, but there are a lot of places you can buy books online. Try to support your local bookstore if you can, however.
Games - Beyond video games, there are also board games that some boys may want. Whether it is the Mindflex game (that's a lot cheaper for Christmas 2012) or a classic board game like Risk, there are quite a few games that 11 year old boys would want this year for Christmas.
These are just a few of the many great gifts you can get a boy who is 11 years old. The most important thing to remember is that the more you know about the boy, the better gift you are going to be able to give them. Make sure you take some time to find out what they might want.
This does not mean you should automatically get anything or everything on their list. Instead, use it as a guide for finding something they will like but at the same time will allow you to put your own personal touch on the gift. This can make the Christmas gift a lot more special - something they keep with them at least until they go off to college or move out of the house.

Why Every Little Boy Wants a Nerf Gun
If you have ever wondered why every little boy wants a Nerf gun, we are going to delve into the topic so that you can come away with a little understanding. After you're done reading, you're going to see why this is one of the most coveted toys for boys of all ages. Gone are the days of the Red Rider BB Gun (that could shoot your eye out) as seen in movies like Christmas Story. Today, Nerf guns offer a safe and fun alternative for all types of boys.
Here is a rundown of the top reasons boys love Nerf guns.
Fun - One of the main reasons that boys love Nerf guns is that they are a lot of fun. When playing and pretending, there's nothing better than being able to tell when a shot actually hits someone.Cool - Beyond just being fun, Nerf guns are also very cool. There are so many different designs and styles these days, that there is truly something for every little boy, no matter what they like.Awesome - Okay, maybe we are going a bit overboard here, but there has been more than one boy in history who has called Nerf toys awesome - especially the guns that shoot harmless Nerf darts.Props - When playing games like war or space aliens, there's nothing like having guns that actually fire a weapon and know if you hit someone. While water guns are nice, you don't want to get wet every day.Easy - Nerf weapons are also very easy to understand - even the Nerf crossbow. Just point and shoot - what is easier than that? The fact that they're so easy makes them great for younger boys as well.
Additionally, parents and grandparents love them because they offer a safe alternative - even for the most destructive of young boys. Here are some other reasons parents love that small boys love Nerf guns.
Price - One of the biggest reasons parents like guns from Nerf is that they're so reasonably priced. This is especially true when you consider the high quality of the toys and how they will hold up over time.Quality - Additionally, parents love the quality of Nerf. They know the toy guns are going to stand up to the test of time and not fall apart or break after being played with once or twice.Safety - Again, it's important to note that Nerf toys are safe when used as directed. You want to make sure you follow age suggestions when buying the toys, but this is not hard to do at all.
As you can clearly see, there are quite a few reasons why every little boy wants a Nerf gun - as well as many reasons why parents love them as well. Whether you are shopping for a birthday gift or for the holidays, going with a classic Nerf toy is always a good choice for boys on your shopping list.

Why Replicas Are a Thing of the Past
Collecting Models of Prehistoric Animals
A Natural History museum is not the only place where one can see models of prehistoric animals. Thanks to an increasing number of figure and replica manufacturers there has been a big increase in the number of plastic dinosaur models and toys available. It may not be practical for your average householder to have a life-size replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex
at home but they can become a dinosaur model collector and enjoy learning about dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals as they build up their collection.
Originally, an industry dominated by European figure makers, usually long-established, family run firms which designed and produced dinosaur models in-house, there has been an increase in the number of replicas designed, as well as produced in the Far East. The industry is now truly global and there is an ever increasing number of dinosaur and prehistoric animal model collectors. Naturally, children collect these models and toys, they are great for encouraging creative, imaginative play. However, there are many serious collectors who have a passion for collecting ranges, especially those that are hand-painted and relatively rare.
Replicas Certified by Palaeontologists
In the late 1980's, Safari Ltd began to make a range of plastic, scale model dinosaurs which had been approved and authenticated by palaeontologists at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (Pittsburgh, United States). This company was not the first to do so, one example of an earlier museum/manufacturer relationship was the partnership between a Leicester based model manufacturer and the Natural History Museum of London (England). The company, called Invicta made a range of single-coloured plastic dinosaur and prehistoric animal replicas. Each model was approved by the scientists at the Natural History Museum and they could be purchased at the Museum's shop. The figures ranged in size from a nine centimetre long model of Scelidosaurus to much larger models, representing much larger dinosaur such as the Diplodocus. These dinosaurs were designed to be seen together as a collection and they were roughly in 1:45 scale. Invicta stopped making these prehistoric animal plastic and vinyl models in the late 1990s and although they only cost a few pounds each when they were first sold, collectors now pay many more times the original sale price in order to add a replica to their collection.
A Hedge Against Inflation
The serious dinosaur model collector can build up a collection worth a small fortune by careful buying and not removing the model from any packaging or taking off any tags that the model has. Schleich models (a German based replica model maker), regularly retires models and these quickly become highly sort after. Just like fine wine such models can quickly increase in value as they are no longer available for sale in shops and collectors can find that their hobby actually becomes a serious investment as well as a hedge against inflation.
Prehistoric Animal Models are Popular Too
It is not just dinosaur models that enthuse both old and young alike. Bullyland (another German based model maker), recently re-introduced a limited edition set of their prehistoric mammals and early human figures. Originally marketed under the brands "Prehistoric Time" and "Cave People" this series of models featured nine prehistoric animals from after the Age of Reptiles and a set of six hominid figures which depicted the ascent of human kind from the apes through the Australopithecines to Neanderthals and eventually modern humans. This model re-issue has proved to be a big hit with dinosaur fans and model collectors who have got an opportunity to purchase any models they missed out on first time around.
Whether it is young children keen to play with their dinosaur models, or indeed the serious collector building up an impressive collection, one thing is for certain, replicas are a thing of the past. Depicting past history through plastic models and showing the types of creatures that once roamed our planet has led to a big demand for prehistoric animal replicas.
